Both Junior and Addy are terrified of bugs. Everything from the smallest fruit fly on up makes them quake in their boots. That’s why when Sam captured a cricket under a glass cup in our guest bedroom the other day, both the kids immediately refused to enter the room.
This last weekend, I tried taking advantage of their fear of the guest room but having my Sunday afternoon nap there instead of on the couch. I reasoned that I’d be able to get a longer nap because the kids would leave me alone out of fear of the cricket.
Unfortunately, I was wrong. The draw of a sleeping parent gave Junior the courage to brave the guest room and wake me up. When I opened my eyes, I saw Junior breathing deeply and quickly, like something traumatic had just happened.
I said, “Hey, buddy, what’s the matter?”
He said, “Dad, when I came to wake you up, I accidentally kicked over the cup that had the cricket under it. But don’t worry, Dad. When I looked, the cricket was lying on his back with his legs in the air, so I was able to get the cup back on him before he turned over and jumped away.”
I couldn’t help but smile as I replied, “Good, job, Junior. It’s a good thing you were so fast. It sounds like that was really a close one.”
To top it off, he responded, “Yeah, really, really close!”
